OVW TV #887: "1st Step on the Stairway"

This is the OVW Report for Wednesday, August 17, 2016. This episode can be seen on WBNA-21 in the Louisville area on Saturday at 11AM and 10PM, and online on Monday at www.ovwrestling.com/tv. In this episode, Tony Gunn defends the TV Title against Bud Dwight, Jamie Lynne defends the Women's Title against Maria James, Rocco Bellagio defends the Heavyweight Title against Devin Driscoll, plus more!

Without further ado:

Here we go...

Pre-Show Dark Matches:

"The Young Lion" Tyler Matrix defeats "The Double R Superstar" Randy Royal (w/Jessie Belle). Jessie got involved a couple times, but Royal is looking for the Royal Flush, and Matrix gets loose and delivers a kick square to Royal's head. He goes up top and nails the swanton bomb for the 3.

OVW Southern Tag Team Champions "The Van Zandt Family Circus": Dapper Dan Van Zandt & Mad Man Pondo (w/Scarlet & Little Damion) defeat Colton Cage & Billy O. Cage takes most of the punishment and gets a hot tag to Billy. Billy comes in firing away, nails some dropkicks, and splashes Pondo & Dan in opposite corners. He gets distracted by Scarlet & Damion who are both crabwalking through the ring. Pondo & Dan squash Billy in between them and nails their doomsday finisher for the 3.

"The Legacy of Brutality": Big Zo & "Hood Ninja" Hy Zaya (w/Josh Ashcraft) defeat The Assassin & Houdini. Assassin locks in an armbar on Hy Zaya, tags in Houdini, and that was the mistake that cost his team the match. Houdini is completely decimated by the Legacy. He tries to get a hot tag to Assassin, but Josh distracts the referee, then pulls Assassin off the apron and hits him with his baton. Zo powerbombs Houdini, and it's followed by a Ninja Vanish from Hy Zaya for the 3.

That concludes tonight's pre-show dark matches. I always recommend watching the episode first on TV or online before reading the rest of the report. Again, you can check it out on WBNA ion-21 in the Louisville area Saturdays at 11AM and 10PM (check local listings) and on OVW's official website Mondays at www.ovwrestling.com/tv.

Gilbert Corsey & Ron Hed are on commentary, and Ron is the ring announcer.

OVW TELEVISION TITLE: "Party Starter" Bud Dwight defeats "Shotgun" Tony Gunn (c) to become NEW OVW TELEVISION CHAMPION. Another classic between these two. A back and forth contest that sees Gunn hit a reverse DDT for 2. Dwight comes back with a Hangover for 2. Gunn hits a DDT for 2. Gunn grabs a chair to hit Dwight, but as the ref takes it away, Gunn grabs the title belt and clocks Dwight. Dwight still kicks out at 2. Dwight comes back and nails the in-knee-briator and gets the 3!
After the match, an angry Gunn attacks Dwight, but Dwight comes back and hits a high knee. He then gives Gunn a taste of his own medicine, clocking him with the TV Title.

OVW WOMEN'S TITLE: "Amazing" Maria James defeats Jamie Lynne (c) to become NEW OVW WOMEN'S CHAMPION. Before the match, Maria says that Jamie Lynne is a disgrace as Women's Champion. Maria attacks Jamie out of the gate, and puts her away pretty quickly with her finisher for the 3.
After the match, Maria decides she is not done, and gives Jamie Lynne another finisher. Referees and the ring girl go in to check on Jamie, and Maria grabs the ring girl and gives her a finisher as well!

Gilbert Corsey brings out Tyler Matrix and says that not long after his big win last week, he got attacked in the back. He asks if he knew who it was. Matrix says he knows exactly who it was, and says that person should come out and face him like a man.
Hy Zaya walks out and says it was him. He has spent over 16 years working this business and performing the Ninja Vanish. He says Matrix just uses a poor man's excuse for a swanton bomb. Hy Zaya says it's about respect. Matrix hits Hy Zaya and goes for the swanton, but Big Zo & Josh Ashcraft run out. Josh hits Matrix in the leg with his baton. Zo slams Matrix and Hy Zaya goes up for the Ninja Vanish, but he gets shoved off by Big Jon. All 4 men brawl, and Jon & Matrix knock the Legacy of Brutality out of the ring.
Dean Hill comes out and says there is one way to settle this, they will have a tag match Saturday, September 3rd at the next Saturday Night Special.

OVW HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE: "The Show Stealer" Rocco Bellagio (c) defeats "The Complete Athlete" Devin Driscoll. Another good back and forth match. Driscoll catches Rocco with a cutter for 2. Rocco then hits a Plunge for 2. Driscoll turns the tables and Plunges Rocco for 2. Rocco comes back with a big boot and hits Driscoll with his cutter for 2. On another Plunge attempt from Rocco, Driscoll slides out, but hurts his knee. Dean Hill and officials come out to check on him, but he chooses to continue the match. Driscoll then catches Rocco with another cutter outta nowhere for 2. Driscoll hits Rocco with another Plunge, but again has knee issues before the cover, and Rocco kicks out at 2. Rocco locks in an ankle lock, twisting the knee, and Driscoll is forced to submit.
After the match, Rocco continues to kick at Driscoll's bad knee, and that brings out Rev. Stu Miles. Stu hits Rocco, and Rocco charges back at Stu, but Stu pulls down the top rope, and Rocco falls to the outside. Stu grabs a mic and says he has prayed long and hard, talked to the big man upstairs, and says it is time he comes after the OVW Heavyweight Title. At the September 3rd SNS, it will be him vs. Rocco in the first ever "Stairway to Heaven" match!

This ended the TV taping.

Post-Show Dark Matches:

Big Jon defeats an unnamed trainee in a squash via the chokeslam.

"The Pastor of Disaster" Rev. Stuart Miles defeats Stephon Smith after submission to the cross arm submission.

As always, thanks for reading!

  1. See? THAT'S how you do something with the women there! No need for constant title changes (even though it DID change again in this instance), just do some character work, changing Maria was a nice change, and it gives reason for Jamie, who seems to be going full time wrestlers if she has ring gear now, to chace after the title.
